INT 231 - Week 7

The Americas, China, and India

Thanks to these three regions, distinct architectural traditions were shaped by their religions, environments, available materials, and cultural beliefs.

Key characteristics from the architecture of the Americas are monumental, stepped pyramids, temples, plazas, and ceremonial centers. They used a lot of stone and adobe construction, depending on the region. Architecture emphasized religion, political power, and community.

Chinese architecture consisted of timber-frame construction using columns, beams, and brackets. They specialized in large overhanging roofs with curved eaves. Symmetry and central axes representing hierarchy and order were significant, and courtyards were used to connect buildings with nature.

For Indian architecture, elaborately carved stone temples with religious symbolism were hallmarks of this architectural style. Stupas serving as Buddhist monuments and places of devotion were popular. Along with that was rock-cut architecture and detailed sculpture, ornamentation, and geometric layouts.

One Step Further...

House Belaku

Belaku, which means "House of Light" is a residential project on the outskirts of Bengaluru. It utilizes solid brick jali, which come from Indian architecture and are screen walls made from solid bricks arranged to form patterns or openings.

Conclusion

Overall, architecture in the Americas, China, and India reflected each civilization’s religious beliefs, cultural values, and environment. Architecture in the Americas emphasized monumental pyramids, stone construction, and ceremonial spaces, while Chinese architecture focused on harmony, symmetry, and wooden structures with distinctive curved roofs. Indian architecture focused on spirituality through detailed carvings, temples, and symbolic designs. Although each region developed its own unique style, all three used were inspired by their beliefs, traditions, and cultural identities in their architecture.
