INT 231 - Week 6
The Gothic Period
The Gothic Period took place between 1150-1500 CE, beginning in France and spreading through Europe. Its primary purpose was to be used for Christian churches and cathedrals, designed to create a sense of awe and encourage people’s attention upward toward God. Some key features were pointed arches, ribbed vaults, flyting buttresses, large stained-glass windows, very tall buildings, spires and towers, and ornamentation.
Personal Favorite
Ornately Designed Windows
Gothic windows such as these remind me of the spirograph toys that were popular when I was a kid. The radial designs are gorgeous; there is nothing mundane or cookie-cutter about these designs.
Application
Gothic Windows
There is still a common use of Gothic style windows in modern homes, usually used in homes with sharp roofs and inviting porches. The decorative lines accenting the windows also appear to be Gothic inspired.
One Step Further...
Shanghai Disneyland Rose Window
The rose window at Shanghai Disneyland is a modern architectural marvel, blending traditional Gothic inspiration with advanced BIM technology to create a spectacular centerpiece atop the Enchanted Storybook Castle.
Conclusion
Overall, the Gothic Period had a major influence on European architecture from 1150–1500 CE. Its innovative structural features allowed architects to create taller, brighter, and more elaborate churches and cathedrals. Elements such as pointed arches, ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, and stained-glass windows not only supported these impressive structures but also created a powerful sense of spirituality. The rose window style also came from this period, which I loved. Gothic architecture continues to be recognized for its dramatic beauty and its ability to connect architectural design with religious expression.
