INT231 - Week 5

Romanesque and Islamic

Romanesque and Islamic architecture developed around the same period but were inspired by different cultural and religious traditions. Both used arches, domes, and extravagant decoration, but they each developed unique visual styles and architectural purposes. The Romanesque style focused more on heavy, solid, Christian medieval architecture. The Islamic style focused more on geometric, decorative, courtyard-centered architecture inspired by Islamic culture and religion.

Personal Favorite

Pattern Pieces

I absolutely love the stunning patterns used in Islamic architecture, in a time where everything is encouraged to be minimalistic and dulled, the expressions of color and various shapes really stir the imagination.

Application

Arches and Patterns

There is a visible resemblance with these structures to the arches and patterns that were so prevalent during the Islamic period. It also doesn't go unnoticed that the use of a three-column-like structure layout was pulled from the Islamic style as well.

Modern Day Coffee Shops

Architectural Harmony A Modern Cafe

Modern Industrial Coffee Shop Interior

Industrial Cafe Design

Modern day industrial coffee shop interiors and exteriors are so comforting and authentic. The use of (or at least the appearance of) materials such as steel, wood, and copper creates a strong and focused environment perfect for a coffeeshop.

Conclusion

Romanesque and Islamic architecture brought a variety of strengths to the architectural world, discovering new ways to express their traditions, religion, and culture to the world. Arches, domes, and extravagant decoration were all emphasized features of this period, and both styles invented their own unique visual styles and architectural purposes.

  4. Zoe,
I appreciated your summary this week. "I absolutely love the stunning patterns used in Islamic architecture, in a time where everything is encouraged to be minimalistic and dulled, the expressions of color and various shapes really stir the imagination" - this statement you made was so meaningful. The color and patterns can transport us to another world. I can also imagine the coffee shop example you gave providing the grounding of the Romanesque period. The "One Step Further" section should show case an Architect, Interior Designer or Artist that uses similar techniques to that shared in our readings for the week. Over all great Blog post. 48/50 points
