INT231 - Week 3
Greek Civilizations
Greek architecture is best known for its temples, and emphasized symmetry, proportion, and simplicity. Materials evolved from wood to stone, especially marble, for durability and aesthetic impact. The three Greek orders—Doric, Ionic, Corinthian—became the foundation of Western architectural tradition. Greek architecture directly influenced Roman architecture, inspiring more orders and later Greek Revival and Neoclassical styles. Its focus on balance, proportion, and harmony remains the highlight of classical design.

The Parthenon
The Parthenon is an ancient Greek temple on the Acropolis of Athens, created in honor of the goddess Athena, and a symbol of classical Greek art, democracy, and Western civilization. The great detail of the Parthenon and the sculptures within amaze me. To create something so beautiful with only one dominating color is a remarkable accomplishment, with the emphasis on the design of its shape and form rather than an extravagant color pallet.
Elgin Marbles
Originally a part of the Parthenon, they were moved to the British Museum in the early 19th century and have been an ongoing subject of debate ever since. Many would prefer them be returned to Greece, where they were originally.

Conclusion
The Classical Civilizations era marks the beginning of western ideas and culture, and the advancement of architecture was very prominent during this time. A popular medium of construction was marble, and a popular building was the Parthenon. Greek design was concerned with visual perfection, and columns (largely popular still today) defined the classical era of architecture.
